Overview: The Yards at 3 Crossings, a 300-unit luxury apartment building opened its first wing in Spring 2016. Each apartment includes an outside balcony trimmed with large horizontal channels, creating a visual underscore at the base. Architects originally specified a steel channel for the trim; however, the project’s construction company recognized it served no structural purpose. The size and weight would add complexity and labor time to the installation and require additional equipment. Additionally, the steel would require future maintenance to prevent unsightly exterior corrosion on the upscale development. Creative Pultrusions custom manufactured channels from Pultex 18” x 2-1/2” x 1/4” channel, which is significantly lower in weight than the steel channel. Each was cut to length and pre-drilled with mounting holes, making it ready to install upon delivery. Prior to installation, the construction company’s crew coated each channel with aliphatic polyurethane to protect it from UV exposure.
